The Six Principles of the GDPR

 

The core of the GDPR is a set of rules governing the lawful processing, from collection to erasure, of any and all personal data. In broad strokes, these consist of the following:

  • Ensuring the lawfulness, fairness, and transparency of data processing;
  • Limiting the purposes for which data may legitimately be processed;
  • Limiting processing to those data which are necessary for the purpose(s) in question;
  • Ensuring the accuracy of the data in question, including updates to reflect changes;
  • Limiting the lengths of time for which data can be stored and accessed for specific legitimate purposes; and
  • Ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of the data in question.

    • In addition, the GDPR requires all banks to demonstrate their organizational and technical ability to reliably apply each of the six principles, as well to ensure accountability if and when any applicable standard is not met.
