Byblos Bank hosts an exhibition by French Humanist Photographer Edouard Boubat

As main partner of Photomed Lebanon, Byblos Bank inaugurated at its headquarters in Ashrafieh a retrospective exhibition by renowned French photographer Edouard Boubat, hailed as one of the main figures of French Humanist Photography.

Titled “Méditerranée”, the exhibition features 48 unique photographs depicting the abundance of life on the Mediterranean. Edouard Boubat is known for his scintillating vision and Humanistic approach in his photographs of this region. “When he goes for a walk, a photographer sees the same spectacle as everybody else. But he stops to watch,” he says.

In her speech for the occasion Nada Tawil, Head of Group Communication Department at Byblos Bank, said: “For us, art constitutes a vector of cultural cohesion and national stability, and we all know Lebanon is in dire need of art to survive the difficult situation it is going through.” She added: “We are honored to admire, in this exhibition, the vivid photographs of Edouard Boubat, whose career inspired and still inspires so many photographers from around the world.”
Philippe Heullant, President of Photomed Lebanon, praised Edouard Boubat’s “exceptional work” and said: “His photographs contribute, without any doubt, to the construction of a positive discourse in the Mediterranean region.”

For his part Guillaume de Sardes, Artistic Director of Photomed Lebanon, said: “The Mediterranean is a thousand things at the same time: not one landscape, but countless landscapes. Not one sea, but a series of seas. Not one civilization, but many civilizations.” He added: “Edouard Boubat proves this with his sensibility towards others and towards the places, which belong to big travelers. His own Mediterranean, even in black and white, is shimmering.”
Born on 13 September 1923 in Paris, Edouard Boubat was among the three main photographers of French magazine Réalités from 1957 to 1970. He was, alongside Brassaï, Willy Ronis, Robert Doisneau, and Izis, one of the five main representatives of French Humanist Photography. This generation of photographers still found a way to believe in man in post-war France. Edouard Boubat passed away in 1999.

Byblos Bank is the main partner of Photomed Lebanon for the third consecutive year. This collaboration is the result of a common vision towards the future of photography in Lebanon and the development of Lebanese talents.

Edouard Boubat’s exhibition at Byblos Bank Headquarters will be open to the public from Friday 22 January till Wednesday, 10 February 2016 from 4:00 PM till 8:00 PM during weekdays, and from 10:00 AM till 3:00 PM on weekends.
